Police-generated digital images should be accompanied by a full audit trail, from the point of capture of the image throughout the whole management process – including when they are passed to the CPS or the defence, or if there is any supervised viewing. All digital images obtained for policing purposes should be treated in accordance with APP on Information Management, Code of Practice on the Management of Police Information and the Data Protection Act 1998.
This gives guidance on the appropriate usage of images in policing, including the audit trail necessary to enable them to be used for evidence.
